General Audition Do and Don t
Auditions - Do and Don't
DO:
- Come prepared! You greatly increase your chances of getting cast if you are prepared
- Be polite to everyone you see at the audition – essentially, your audition begins the moment you arrive, so being rude to any helpers or other auditioners does not bode well for you
- Choose an audition piece that showcases your voice – if you’re going for a belting role, find a song that shows us you can belt. If your desired role is meant to be played by a tenor, sing a song that shows us that range of your voice
- Bring sheet music – you need to have the music for the 16-32 measures of the song you will be singing - we expect many auditioners, and will be cutting people off
- Make bold, interesting, and motivated choices - be sure to have your audition piece blocked
- Wear appropriate attire – something that is not distracting and that allows the directors to envision you as any character. Also, since there is a dance audition, be prepared to move OR bring clothing to change into
- Have fun!
DON’T:
- Sing a song from the show – that is what callbacks are for
- Apologize or make excuses – if you’re sick, we will be able to tell. If you mess up, carry on as though it didn’t happen.
- Arrive without sheet music – no a-capella or karaoke auditions will be considered
- Choose a song that is outside of your range – set yourself up for success!
- Choose profane or inappropriate material
- Dress in costume
- Have your phone out during the audition
