         The Steps to Applying for Financial Aid for College  

 #1.  Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)! Application opens October 1.

FAFSA application required for Cal Grants, Federal Work Study, Federal College Loans, California Middle Class Scholarship, and is required by many schools for students to be eligible for merit scholarships. Even if you think you won't qualify for Student Aid, complete the FAFSA before March 2! This will keep doors open and costs nothing but some time!  For more information, contact the College/Career Center. Students planning to attend Folsom Lake College MUST complete the FAFSA in order to qualify for two years FREE tuition grants.   Filling Out the FAFSA Form How Financial Aid works. 8 Easy Steps for Parent Completing FAFSA Form. The Top 10 Reasons to Complete the FAFSA FAFSA Basic Info A Parent's Guide to the FAFSA How Much Does College Cost?   After the FAFSA?  The SAR (Student Aid Report)   Apply for these by completing the FAFSA (above) - California Financial Aid Programs:  Students must be attending a California school to utilize these grants.   CAL Grant Programs  **Note:  students are only eligible to apply for these as seniors or within the 1st year after graduation.  These grants are good for 4 years when students maintain eligibility. California Dream Act  Financial aid for California students without residency documentation/Social Security number. California Middle Class Scholarship  Grants for families making up to (approx) $171,000/yr. paying between 10%-40% of tuition cost.    

 #2.  Explore the Financial Aid information at colleges to which you apply.

Look for college specific grants and scholarships.  Check out the process and deadlines and apply.  Know that financial aid application deadlines often occur before you know if you have been accepted to that school. Know that many colleges require that the student has submitted the FAFSA in order to be considered for any financial aid, including merit scholarships.
